Spectrophotometric Quantification of Guaifenesin in Tablet Dosage form using Potassium Permanganate

Abstract


A simple, accurate, precise and robust spectrophotometric method was developed and validated for the estimation of guaifenesin in bulk drug and in pharmaceutical dosage form. The proposed method is based on the based on oxidation of guaifenesin with excess potassium permanganate in acidic medium and the residual potassium permanganate was measured spectrophotometrically at 525 nm. The method obeyed Beer’s law in the concentration range 1.0-15.0 μg mL-1. The results of the analysis have been validated and recovery studies confirmed the accuracy of the proposed method by applying the standard addition technique. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of guaifenesin in pharmaceutical dosage form and the results were statistically compared with the official method.
